Stop Paying Attention to your Morning Brain

Do you every wake up in the morning already in a bad mood?

Is the first thing you say to yourself, “ugh!”

Or maybe you had some bad dreams that created some negative energy.

Before coaching, I used to pay a lot of attention to this.

Why am I feeling this way?  What’s wrong with me this morning?  What’s going on here?

I thought it was a problem to fix.

But giving my “yucky morning brain” attention actually gave those negative emotions even more energy.

I now instead do three simple things before I even get out of bed when I wake up this way.

Step One – Bring Awareness to the Morning Brain

I notice I’m feeling bad and say, this is just a yucky morning brain, the less attention I pay to this the better.

The thoughts my brain was processing while I was sleeping created this bad feeling.

I’m not giving these thoughts or feelings any more energy.

Step Two – Compassion to the Morning Brain

I acknowledge that I’m feeling bad and give a little compassion to myself so I can process the feeling.

I say to myself, you are okay.  I hear you brain and I’ve got you.

Sometimes when I’m feeling extra bad I’ll even place a hand on my heart and give myself a little comfort.

Step Three – Redirect the Morning Brain

Finally, I shift my brain to gratitude.

I think of something I am grateful for from the day before or something simple like having a cozy bed and central air during a Texas Summer.

If I cant think of anything I just say, “thank you, thank you, thank you”.

Shake off the Morning Brain

These little exercises take less than a minute and really help me to shake off those heavy feelings.

Some mornings are extra heavy and I need to keep myself in gratitude a little longer.

With each step to the bathroom and kitchen I just keep repeating to myself or even outloud, thank you, thank you, thank you.

Next time you wake up in a funk, give it a try.  You will be surprised by what a difference it makes!
