Solution vs. Problem Focused

Where your focus goes, your energy flows.

When you have a problem, challenge or situation you don’t like, keeping your brain focused on the problem will keep you stuck.

For example, one of my clients wanted to start exercising again.  She loved to go for walks and runs and wanted to get back into it.

Before coaching, she was telling herself, I don’t have time.  I’m not taking care of myself.  Life’s too busy.  I can’t fit it in.

Yes, her time was limited because she works full-time and had two school-aged kids.  However, focusing on what time she did not have kept her stuck.

I helped her to shift her focus to get her moving toward a solution.

She began by saying to herself, “Yes, my work schedule is busy, but I want to show my kids that I take care of myself.  I need this for my mental and physical health.  When can I take a look at my calendar and schedule some time over the next two weeks?.”

Lo and behold! 

Pockets of time in her calendar became evident and she began planning for and exercising again!

When you are in a disempowered mindset you might say, “I don’t have any time to take care of myself.  Work is crazy.  My life is out of control.” 

This leaves you feeling like you are a victim of your schedule, crazy and out of control.

It’s imperative to shift from focusing on the problem, “I’m not taking care of myself” to the solution, “when can I make time to take care of myself?”

  • Are you dwelling on a current or future problem?
  • Are you focused on how you can’t create the healthy habit you want?
  • Or are you focusing on a strategy to overcome?
