Step #5 To the Empowered Mindset Necessary for Creating Healthy Habits

Practicing Helpful Emotions on Purpose

If you are wanting to create positive change in your life, your actions toward that change need to be driven by helpful emotions.

Emotions like grit, determination, courage and confidence are essential.

What I have learned through coaching is that It is possible for us to feel any emotion at any time.  This is the beauty of the human brain.

We do this every day without even thinking about it.

Did you ever sit and look at pictures of a happy memory or when you child was a baby and just be flooded with warm feelings?

Can you recall your most embarrassing moment and still feel like hiding under a rock?

You are creating emotions with the story you are telling yourself about events in your past.

With intention and practice we can generate emotions that we would like to feel today.  Emotions that help us move toward our goals or through any challenge.

We can create and practice stories that make us feel confident, empowered and motivated.

We can also create and practice stories that make us feel insecure, defeated and discouraged.

Both scenarios are possible, they just take intention and practice.  Just like learning a handstand, you need to consciously work on it a little bit every day.

Let’s say you are wanting to improve your diet.  What are some emotions that would be most helpful to move you toward this goal?  For many women that would be motivation, focus and determination.  But the mistake many of us make are practicing our default stories that leave us feeling unmotivated, scattered and discouraged.

Thinking I don’t know where to begin, I have no idea what to eat and I can’t do this anymore will generate emotions that keep you from moving forward.

Instead, choosing thoughts to practice daily like, I’ve got this, I love the way I feel when I give my body nutrient-dense food, and I’m going to keep going no matter how many detours I hit, leave you feeling empowered and motivated.

Generating helpful emotions takes lots of intention and practice.

START ASKING YOURSELF

  • What is a helpful emotion you could begin practicing today?
  • What thought creates that emotion for you?
  • Can you commit to start practicing that thought every day?
